In September 2022, BDI and the Brittany Region joined the European RED II Ports project, to work on the energy transition of regional ports. As the lead agency for the Brittany Region’s renewable hydrogen roadmap, BDI is making its various areas of expertise available to the project. In particular, BDI has developed a map of the Brittany port ecosystem via the Craft skills base, and is working to develop partnership and business opportunities for the players involved.
BDI is working alongside the Port of Brest and the region within the European framework
As part of the Interreg North Sea programme, BDI and Breton stakeholders have joined a 16-stakeholder consortium that will evaluate five alternative fuel and clean energy technologies for ships and ports, including hydrogen. BDI is one of 16 partners in the RED II Ports project, which is made up of port authorities, scientists and business partners and led by the Port of Skagen in Denmark. The Port of Brest has been selected by the Brittany Region to study this subject. BDI is supporting the Port of Brest, which is owned by the Brittany Region. Thirteen European port sites are now part of this new network, which is at the forefront of energy transition and carbon-free maritime transport.
BDI has developed a map of the Brest H2 port ecosystem
In Brittany, the Port of Brest has been chosen as a pilot site for a study into the potential of renewable hydrogen and associated logistics chains in maritime and port ecosystems. The aim of these studies is to provide concrete operational elements in response to the ambitions of the Region’s public policies in this area.
BDI contributed to this study by helping to mobilise local players and by developing a database to promote the results of the study (available in English and French)
BDI at work to create partnership and business opportunities
To encourage players in the industry to take advantage of the decarbonisation opportunities offered by H2, BDI has organised several events to present the REDII Ports project. These have included presentations at the European Maritim days in Brest in 2023, the Hyvolution 2023 and 2024 trade fairs in Paris and, most recently, SeaTechWeek in Brest in 2024.
The REDII Ports project runs until March 2026 and BDI is continuing to work towards its success. If you are interested in meeting the people involved in this project or finding out more about the initial results obtained by the partners testing the five alternative fuel and clean energy technologies for ships and ports, we are pleased to invite you to visit the REDII ports website and/or to come and meet us at the Hyvolution trade fair to be held in Paris from 28 to 30 January 2025. The BDI Europe team and Brittany Renewable H2 will be happy to provide you with further information.
